The town had a population of 655 in the 2011 Canadian Census. In addition to the primary settlement at South River, the town also includes the smaller settlements of The Broads and Springfield. Salmon Cove Road occupies the north side of a hill known as Long Harry, the south side of which is occupied by Cupids, the oldest English settlement in North America. As such, Salmon Cove is among the oldest continually inhabited places on the continent. The first mayor of South River was Mr. Harry L. Shepherd.
